ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Effective instruction for ELL’s is to both support grade level learning outcomes as well as promote language acquisition. Students will be supported through:

  • Flexible groupings

  • Acknowledging value in their own language

  • Providing opportunities to use their home language

  • Transcripts and captions during videos and movies

  • Graphic supports

  • Built in dictionaries and glossaries

  • Word prediction

 

Alberta K-12 Proficiency Benchmarks can be used in assessing and monitoring the language proficiency of English Language Learners planning for language instruction. It can also be used to communicate with English language learners, their parents and their other teachers about students language proficiencies (Alberta Government, n.d.).
