LESSONS OVERVIEW

WEEK 1

Week one introduces the unit of space science to the class to gather information about what students already know and would like to learn. A field trip to Telus Spark will help hook students into the unit, while bringing in a member of the Indigenous community will allow students to learn more about the Indigenous perspective, along with their culture and history.

WEEK 2

Week two goes more in depth on the planets in the solar system, along with researching their characteristics and figuring out if this makes a planet livable. Using a space simulation or live stream will also help hook students into the lessons before presenting their findings to the class.

WEEK 3

Week three centers around the concept of living in space and what makes this possible, as seen in the movie The Martian. This opens up the conversation before introducing students to the final performance task.

WEEK 4

Week four focuses on students’ work for their final performance task about living on Mars and the habitat prototypes they are creating to answer the final question on why the government should invest in their design. After the completion of their work, a showcase will be held to present their work, with the hopes of inviting experts into the class to give their input.
